After two weeks, Carson High track coach Robert Maw is ready to take the wraps off his squad.
The Senators were originally scheduled to go to Rocklin, Calif., but because of money and transportation issues, the team will compete instead at the Fallon Invitational on Saturday.
"We're going to go out there and try to compete," Maw said. "We're going to put people in their best spots. In the first two meets, we didn't do that."
Here's a look at this year's boys team:
SPRINTS (100-200-400)
Brandon Briggs, Dylan Sawyers, Mark Sinnott, Ean Witter and Robbie Figueroa will primarily run the 100 and 200. Robby Barlow, David McMasters, Brandon Buonacorsi and Luke Carter are among the 400 runners.
"Dylan was looking really good," Maw said. "He has a hip flexor and will be out two weeks. We might get him back for regionals. Brandon came out of the blue and Mark is running well."
DISTANCE (800-1600-3200)
Richard Shroy is one of the top 3200 runners in the state, and he'll also run the 1,600 at times. He ran both on Saturday " a 4:43 and 10:25.16. He is coming off two second-place finishes.
"There are only two guys in Northern Nevada that will hang with him," Maw said. "He ran well at the Simplot 3,000 (in Pocatello)."
Barlow, Logan Philippe, Nick Schlager, Josh Van Sickle, McMasters and Brent Moyle will be counted on to rack up points. Barlow is coming off a 2:10.3 in a meet against Reno and Bishop Manogue.
HURDLES
Luke Carter and James Simmons went 1-2 in the 110 high hurdles and 300 hurdles last weekend. Maw will be counting on those type performances all season.
JUMPS, POLEVAULT
Evan Pearson, Steve Fowzer, Carter and Josh Peacock will take care of the jumps for the Senators. Pearson went 40-feet-11⁄2-inches last weekend en route to a second-place finish in the triple jump, while Fowzer was third at 39-53⁄4. Carter went 19-10 1⁄4 in the long jump, while Peacock was fourth at 19-feet 1⁄4.
inch.
"Evan was 40-plus in the triple jump and that was OK," Maw said. "I'd like to see him get to 44 or 45 feet by the end of the year. Luke long jumped for the first time without any coaching and almost went 20 feet."
Briggs and Peacock are the best high jumpers, but are around 5-6 right now. Cameron Childers vaulted 12 feet last week and finished third.
Discus, Shot Put
Blake McCoy went 137-8 last weekend en route to a first-place finish. Eric Robertson and Shane Mooney also are expected to contribute.
"He (McCoy) had a great start in the preseason," Maw said. "He threw 137 last week which is great for a sophomore. I expect good things from him."
Here's a look at the girls' squad:
Sprints (100-200-400)
Emily Field, Julianne King, Krista Baumgartner and Haleigh Ward will handle the shorter events, both on an individual and relay basis, according to Maw.
Field, after a year's absence, won the 200 in 28.6 last weekend. Carson went 1-2-3 in the 100 with King (13.31), Baumgartner (13.42) and Ward (14.03). Ward ran a 1:05 to finish second in the 400. Amanda Gordon and Katie McFarren also figure in the 400.
Distance (800, 1600, 3200)
McFarren, coming off a 2:49.0 effort last weekend, will run the longer distances along with Erica Sosa and Gordon. Sosa ran a 13:20.40 in the 3200 and a 5:59.3 in the 1600. She took second in both events. Gordon was third in the 1600 (6:04.9) and third in the 3200 (13:25.42).
Hurdles
The Senators are thin with just Alex Fallon and Carolina Montiel competing. Fallon ran a 19.23 in the 100 hurdles and 53.2 in the 300 hurdles. Montiel is coming off a 55.6 in the 300.
Jumps, Vault
Alysa Sharp went 7 feet in the pole vault last weekend en route to a fourth-place finish. Fallon and Sarah Hernandez are the triple jumpers, while Tina Midboe was fourth in the long jump last weekend.
Maw said that Fallon is doing well in the triple jump, but needs to improve by a foot or two to reach regionals.
Shot Put, Discus
Britney Dixon is the Senators' main threat in both weight events. She threw 28-2 and 74-81⁄2 last weekend
