Carson Sertoma Club is hoping the community tunes in as they bring live jazz and the history of rock 'n' roll to its "Family Fun Night of Music."
Sertoma's annual fundraiser will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center, 911 Beverly Drive.
The fundraiser is open to the public and offers the Carson High School Jazz Combo for live music, and The Rockin' Rev. Ken Haskins, who will present a history of rock 'n' roll from 1945-1954. The $20 admission includes a tri-tip dinner, prizes, live music and dancing.
"People were rockin' and rollin' before it was a national craze," Haskins said. "I'll play excerpts from songs " which are great for dancing " of ballads and upbeat songs."
The fundraiser benefits the Carson City School District's hearing and speech-impaired program. Sertoma also gives money to the Carson Chapter for Diabetes for Children and Adults, Carson Advocates for Cancer Care and the Angel Kiss Foundation.
Carson High School music teacher Jarod Sorum said the students enjoy public performances. They will be featured from 6-7 p.m.
"They jump at the chance to perform," Sorum said. "They'll perform all eras, all artists " a wide spectrum of music."
The club's annual fundraiser used to be a men-only, wild game feed with the Bud Girls.
"We ... decided to open it up to women and children to get more people at the event," said Frank Taylor, vice president for public relations. "Then Ken (Haskins) said he' be happy to do it, and my stepdaughter, Ariel Sanchez, she plays the alto saxophone and is a drum major in the Blue Thunder band, said the jazz band loves to play and show off, so she asked the teacher. And here we are."
