A Carson City inmate remained in a Reno hospital Tuesday after she allegedly attempted to hang herself from a second-story balcony, but instead fell 18 feet to the floor and fractured her heel.

According to the press release, the 36-year-old Dayton woman was arrested March 18 on a contempt of court warrant out of Carson City.

A second warrant surfaced while she was in custody for failure to appear on a DUI charge in Dayton.

At noon Saturday, the woman took a sheet, tied one end to her neck and tied the other to the second-story railing.

"Then she took one step over the railing and just stepped off," said Sheriff Ken Furlong, who'd watched surveillance video of the incident.

He said nothing in the woman's demeanor or statements to officers indicated she wanted to harm herself.

According to the release, during a previous arrest she had complained she was stressed.

"On that occasion she posted bail and was released before services could be offered," the release states. On at least one other occasion, an inmate jumped from the second story in a suicide attempt. In that instance the man survived the fall but broke both heels.
