RENO (AP) " The Reno City Council has accepted salary and benefit concessions from six employee unions that were offered to avoid layoffs and save the city $1.2 million.

Reno firefighters are the latest group that voted for cuts that will save $532,000. City officials had said 12 firefighters would have been laid off without concessions.

Still outstanding are concessions from the Reno Police Supervisory groups that represent about 60 lieutenants and sergeants and city administrators.

Police Chief Michael Poehlman says if no agreement is reached by Tuesday, $83,000 in savings will have to come from job cuts. He says two sergeants likely would be demoted to officer and the two most junior officers would be laid off.
