A gentleman of unquestioned character states that about 8 o'clock on Friday evening business called him to Chinatown, and while there he saw two young men and young women stagger out of an opium den, reeling as if they were drunk. The quartet felt entirely indifferent about his presence, and chatted as if no one were within earshot of their silly and vulgar conversation. If the police force is inadequate to have an officer stationed in Chinatown at all times, the powers that be ought to appoint another for that special service.

In a recent communication from Manila we learn that several Nevada boys are on their backs ill with the fever including Captain F. Linscott and Second Lieutenant Wright. No serious results are expected. Troops are employing a large guard about the town of Cavite in charge of some 879 Filipino prisoners of war. The Nevada boys are very anxious to participate in a pitched fight.

70 years ago

Today students gave a sigh of relief when they were allowed to enjoy a half day of vacation from books to paint the C. But why paint the C? The large white C which can be seen on the nearby hill to the west is a symbol of Carson. It is an advertisement for both Carson and the school. The "C" is a reminder to all of the civic-mindedness and loyalty which can be found in this city.

Delayed employee tax checks from the state to the Internal Revenue Service have cost Nevada $37,000 in fines, lawmakers said today in questioning state Treasurer Ken Santor.
