More good luck befell Carson City's Don Lamb on Thursday when a surgical center and anesthesiologist said they would donate their services for Lamb's glaucoma surgery next week.
Three months ago, Lamb, a former supervisor for Leroy's Sportbooks, was waiting for his waning vision to be gone completely. He did not have medical insurance to cover the $5,000 surgery, and because he could no longer work, he could not risk spending his savings on a surgery that couldn't guarantee saving his vision.
The community responded by donating to a medical account set up in Lamb's name. Then, his ophthalmologist, Dr. Robert Wolff, agreed to perform the procedure free of charge.
On Thursday, Heidi Anderson with Sierra Surgery Hospital said the hospital would not charge Lamb for use of the facility. She said that Dr. Bruce Baldecchi of Anesthesiologist Professionals also agreed to donate his time and supplies for Lamb's 30-minute procedure.
"The story was just was amazing," Anderson said. "And I thought, this man's coming here, and having the surgery here. The community has reached out, why can't we?"
Lamb's reaction to the news Thursday was as it has been all along " surprise.
"I'm speechless," he said. "It's a lot of weight off my shoulders. I just hope the surgery comes out OK."
