This is a scheduler's dream " archrivals squaring off in the final week of the season with a league championship up for grabs.
That will be the case when the Carson and Douglas baseball teams square off in a three-game series starting Wednesday at Carson. The middle game will be at Douglas on Thursday and then Carson hosts the finale Friday.
The teams aren't playing Saturday for several reasons. The first is that it is Carson's prom, secondly teams want to finish before the weekend so the top pitchers will be able to come back and throw the playoff openers next week and lastly all-league meetings are slated for this weekend.
Douglas has more quality wins, having knocked off Reno twice this season, but Carson swept Galena, something which Douglas was unable to do.
I've learned not to discount Carson. If there is a way to win, Carson will find it as it did last weekend against Galena with its two come-from-behind wins in the doubleheader. There is a sense of calm that surrounds the Senators even in the toughest of times.
The only complaint I have about this week's series is that none of the games are at night where you could draw many more fans.
The Galena-Carson series was probably one of the most entertaining I've seen in my six years in Northern Nevada.
Three clean (not many errors), well-played games though there was chipping aplenty from coaches on both sides and a couple of ejections, too.
- David Leid, a Carson High graduate, is tearing it up at Feather River College.
As of earlier this week, Leid is hitting .394 with four homers, 14 doubles, 10 stolen bases and 46 RBIs.
A catcher by trade, Leid has seen the most action at designated hitter and he's played a little third base
"He's doing a good job," Feather River coach Terry Baumgartner said. "We just want to keep his bat in the lineup. We knew he could hit, but didn't really know if he could run.
"He works hard, too. You never know how hard a guy works until you get him out here. He's a good teammate."
Leid was originally headed to Feather River out of high school, but opted to follow the old Feather River coach over to Delta College where he redshirted his first year.
- I know why the NIAA is doing it, but I disagree with playing afternoon games (1 and 4 p.m.) for the baseball playoffs, which will be conducted at Wooster and Reno high schools.
Schools gripe all the time about athletes getting out of class. For a 1 p.m. game, a student-athlete might only finish one class before having to leave campus depending on what type of schedule a school has.
What is wrong with playing night games? I know that most teams can't or haven't played under the lights this year. I don't see that as a huge problem. Make Reno and Carson's fields available for night practices for the other teams.
Also, did anybody even think about Peccole Park at the University of Nevada? Did anybody think to see if the facility would have been available for rent?
I just think night games make more money. Not every parent has a job where he or she can get off in the middle of the day to go see a baseball game.
I'm off my soapbox and outta here.
- A reminder to local baseball fans.
The Carson City Babe Ruth program will hold its opening ceremonies on May 9 at 9:30 a.m. at Governors Field.
There will be games played after the introductions of local dignitaries and teams.
Come out and support your future Carson High School players
