Dayton High School's Safe Grad Night Committee has planned several fundraisers to stage a safe and sober graduation celebration.
"It's important to reward our grads for their hard work with an event that is fun and safe in a chaperoned environment," said Grace Jones, committee member. "This is the biggest party night of the year. A lot can go wrong."
The Booster Club stepped up to plan the event three years ago, when Lyon County Parks and Recreation no longer had the funding to support the evening. The committee hopes to raise $17,000.
Safe and Sober Grad Night takes place at the Incline Recreation Center, providing an all-night party that includes swimming, jousting, food and beverages and raffle drawings for the graduates.
The committee also works to present every graduate with an item or gift card that can be used when they leave home.
"We know how tight it is out there," Jones said. "Just think if every person donated $1 or if 10 people sent $10, it adds up. Every bit makes a huge difference."
Organizers expect 155 students plus guests to attend this year.
Jones said she is hopeful that businesses and other community members will help out.
"What I know is that Dayton is a great community and they always come through," she said.
