Fighting dust devils and lunch-time traffic Wednesday, officers with the Carson City Sheriff's Department covered the final 18 miles of the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Run.
A star-spangled baton containing the names of Nevada's 104 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty was handed off by a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy to the Carson City runners at the Silver City RV Resort in Minden.
Carson's runners were made up of SWAT members, detectives and patrol sergeants. The Nevada Highway Patrol provided traffic control.
This was the 10th year for the memorial run that began 400 miles and one week ago in Las Vegas. Each of the 104 legs of the memorial run represents a fallen officer.
Today, the baton will be run onto the Legislative grounds where it will be delivered to the family of Sgt. Richard L. Willson, a Mineral County officer who died in 1994 after suffering a heart attack following a foot chase.
The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony begins at noon on the Legislative grounds at the state's memorial statue dedicated by Gov. Bob Miller in 1998.
The ceremony includes: Presentation of the colors, bagpipes, laying of the wreath, speeches, prayer, songs, a riderless horse and is finalized by families of the fallen laying carnations on the memorial.
Representatives of law enforcement agencies from across Nevada attend the event.
The public is invited to attend.
