Hugh Smokey Sr., age 62 passed on peacefully among family and friends May 6, 2009. He is the second eldest of 12 children born in Schurz, Nev. to Flora Snooks Smokey and the late Carnegie Smokey Sr. June 18, 1946. He was a lifetime resident of Carson Valley.
He is preceded in death by his father Carnegie Smokey Sr.; sister Jeannie Smokey-Jim; paternal grandparents William and Sadie Smokey and maternal grandfather Jackson Snooks.
He is survived by his mother Flora; son Hugh Smokey Jr.; daughters Sheila, Candace and Melanie Smokey; eight grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; siblings Angie-Smokey of Phoenix, Ariz., Carnegie Smokey Jr., Norma Smokey, Errol Smokey, Norrine Smokey-Smith of Portland, Ore, Arnold Smokey, Becky Smokey, Eric Smokey all of Dresslerville and Adrienne Smokey-Lien of Sumner, Wash.
A trait of a fisherman is compassion and patience and these are things that we've always known Hughie to be - a gentle and caring man.
Viewing will be 6-8 p.m., today at Walton's Chapel of the Valley, Carson City. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Stewart Baptist Church on Snyder Way in Stewart. Burial will be at the Happy Hunting Grounds at Bodie Flats. A dinner will immediately follow at the Dresslerville Gymnasium.
Walton's Chapel of the Valley has been entrusted with his final arrangements.
