The family of Rene Angulo confirmed today that the high school student was killed in a shooting on Highway 395 in Washoe County on Mother's Day.
Rene, who just turned 17 on April 19, last spoke to his mother Martha Sunday morning before he left to go job hunting, said brother Mario Angulo.
"He gave her a kiss and told her Happy Mother's Day," Mario said.
Mario's girlfriend said she saw Rene in El Pollo Loco about noon.
A half hour later., the Carson High School junior who'd gone to prom the night before, was found dead on the side of Highway 395 in Washoe Valley and his alleged killer was fleeing in Rene's vehicle.
A passerby who stopped was also shot, but is expected to survive.
Washoe County investigators have yet to release the name of the shooter who was apprehended behind homes off Old 395 and Bellevue Road. They have also not said what the motive for the killing was.
Mario Angulo was adamant his brother, who was born and raised in Carson City, was not in a gang.
"He hated those guys," said Mario. "He didn't hang around any of those kinds of people. We're guessing (the shooter) just wanted his car."
