Hearing set for man accused of killing Carson teen, shooting Carson man

RENO " A May 27 preliminary hearing has been set for a 24-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a Carson High School student and wounding another man who stopped to help along U.S. Highway 395 in Washoe Valley south of Reno.

Steve Contreras, who also goes by the name of Victor Rodriguez, appeared for a video arraignment Wednesday in Reno before senior Justice of the Peace Edward Dannan.

During the brief proceeding, he appeared to become light headed and was assisted by deputies.

Contreras is charged with first-degree murder for the Mother's Day killing of 17-year-old Rene Angulo and the attempted murder of 51-year-old Wayne Nash, a Carson High assistant basketball coach.

Contreras also faces four counts related to false identification.
