AL roundup: Indians' Lee wins in pitchers' duel

CLEVELAND (AP) " Cliff Lee outpitched Mark Buehrle, throwing seven innings in the Cleveland Indians' 4-0 win Wednesday to take two of three from the Chicago White Sox.

It was the second series the last-place Indians have won this year, and the first since they took two of three from Kansas City at home April 21-23. Cleveland had not shut out an opponent since Lee did it with a complete game against the White Sox on Sept. 1.

Victor Martinez homered on Buehrle's seventh pitch of the game, and Ryan Garko added a two-run blast in the fourth to give Lee (2-5) his first victory in nearly a month.

The four runs Cleveland scored Wednesday doubled its output in Lee's previous four starts combined.

Lee, who hadn't won since April 16 at New York, entered the day tied for the league lead in losses despite a 1.70 ERA in his last five starts. Yankees 8, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO (AP) " Brett Gardner hit his first major league homer and drove in three runs, Andy Pettitte won for the first time in four starts and the Yankees beat the Blue Jays.

The Yankees finished with 11 hits, including eight for extra bases, and improved to 11-0 when holding their opponent to three runs or less.

Gardner also tripled and scored twice, and Mark Teixeira finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs, raising his average to .202.

Every Yankees starter except right fielder Nick Swisher reached base safely at least once. Besides Swisher, the only Yankees starter not to get a hit was Alex Rodriguez, who went 0 for 2 with three walks.

Rays 8, Orioles 6

BALTIMORE (AP) " Willie Aybar hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the sixth inning and the Rays beat the Orioles.

Jason Bartlett matched a career high with his fifth homer of the season for the Rays, who scored four times in the ninth off Bob McCrory and held on after the Orioles rallied in the bottom half. Bartlett and B.J. Upton finished with three hits each and Dioner Navarro had two RBIs.

Jeff Niemann (3-3) struggled through five innings, but picked up his third victory in four decisions. The right-hander allowed two runs and eight hits. J.P. Howell got the final two outs for his first save.

Ty Wigginton had three hits, including a homer, for the Orioles.

Rangers 6, Mariners 5, 11 innings

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) " Hank Blalock's two-run double in the 11th inning rallied the Rangers to a victory over the Mariners.

Wladimir Balentien's RBI double in the top of the 11th had given the Mariners a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom half, Michael Young led off with a single off Mariners closer Brandon Morrow (0-2). Josh Hamilton walked and one out later, Blalock's line drive to right-center chased home both runners as teammates streamed out of the dugout in celebration.

C.J. Wilson (2-2) pitched two innings for the Rangers, who won for the ninth time in their last 11 games.

Adrian Beltre, Kenji Johjima and Russell Branyan homered for the Mariners, who have lost eight of their last nine.

Angels 8, Red Sox 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) " Matt Palmer overcame a shaky start before retiring the last 19 batters to lead the Angels to a victory over the Red Sox.

Mike Napoli hit a go-ahead three-run homer and Torii Hunter also went deep against knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (4-2), who is 0-6 with a 9.30 ERA in his last six road starts against the two-time defending AL West champions.

Palmer (4-0) allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked two. The right-hander made his first three big league starts last season with San Francisco and lost all of them.

The complete game was the Angels' third in their last six contests.

Athletics 7, Royals 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) " Jack Cust's three-run double broke open a close game and helped Josh Outman win his first game of the season as the Athletics beat the Royals.

Kansas City starter Brian Bannister (3-1) gave up two runs in 5 2-3 innings and lost for the first time this season. The right-hander left the game with tightness in his right shoulder after Cust hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Outman (1-0) allowed just three hits and a run in six innings. He walked two while striking out four to get his first win in five starts and help Oakland sweep the two-game series.

Michael Wuertz, Russ Springer and Andrew Bailey completed the four-hitter for the A's.

Twins 14, Tigers 10, 13 innings

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) " Joe Crede's two-out grand slam in the 13th inning off a tired Brandon Lyon gave the Twins a win over Detroit " hours after Dontrelle Willis made his first start of the season for the Tigers.

Matt Tolbert's single that Josh Anderson tried to catch but trapped in left tied it at 10 against Lyon (1-3), who loaded the bases in his third inning before Crede's seventh career slam.

Curtis Granderson helped Detroit take a 10-9 lead in the top half of the 13th with a little trickery on the bases, faking a break for home to induce a two-out balk by Jesse Crain (2-1).
