LAS VEGAS (AP) " A newspaper poll shows Nevada voters are split about evenly over whether the state Legislature should increase taxes or cut programs to deal with budget problems.

The poll by the Las Vegas-Review Journal released Sunday showed 43 percent of voters prefer to increase taxes, while 41 percent prefer to cut programs. The rest say they don't know or believe a combination of increased taxes and cuts would be the proper solution. The poll has an error margin of 4 percentage points.

About seven in 10 Nevadans polled say they don't support creating a state personal income tax.

But 57 percent say they favor increasing state taxes to maintain current teacher salaries over cutting the salaries 4 percent.

The poll of 625 registered Nevada voters was conducted last week.
