Boy Scouts to place flags on graves

The Disabled American Veterans, local veterans organizations and the Boy Scouts will place U.S. flags on veterans' graves at Lone Mountain Cemetery at 4:30 p.m. today. The public is invited. Contact Bob Crowder at 885-6003, Ron Gutzman at 882-6528 or e-mail wwskw@aol.com.

Virginia City parade

The annual Celebration of Heroes Parade down C Street in Virginia City starts at noon Saturday. Grand marshals will be the Bolander family, whose son, Staff Sgt. Bryan Bolander, 26, was killed in Iraq on April 29, 2008. Details: 847-4836 or www.visitvirginiacity.com.

Lone Mountain service

Lone Mountain Cemetery invites the public to the Memorial Day services, 1 p.m. Monday 1044 Beverly Drive. The service will last approximately one hour with various speakers honoring those who gave their lives. Call 887-2111.

Calvary Pentecostal honors veterans

The Calvary Pentecostal Church invites all military families and veterans as special guests to be honored with a patriotic service, 11:30 a.m. Sunday, 220 W. Winnie Lane. All are welcome to attend, non-military as well, in support of our troops. The Calvary Pentecostal Church launches a new ministry "Adopt Our Soldiers" that will adopt local soldiers and families providing care packages and spiritual support. Following the service a complimentary barbecue lunch will be served at Mills Park. Seating is limited. For information and to RSVP, call 882-2238.

Veterans of Foreign Wars to lead tribute

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dayton Valley Post 8660 will lead a tribute to those veterans who lost their lives in the defense of their country, 9 a.m. Monday at the Dayton Historic Cemetery. The American Legion Post 56 Honor Guard will fire a salute followed by the playing of Taps. Call 246-9374.

Marine Corps to hold ceremony

The Marine Corps League Silver State Detachment No. 630 will hold a brief ceremony to honor those that have died in past wars 10:30 a.m. Monday at Stewart Indian Cemetery and noon at Lone Mountain Cemetery. Sierra Interfaith Action for Peace

Sierra Interfaith Action for Peace will hold its annual name reading/flag planting ceremony for those Americans who have died in Iraq, 1-5 p.m. Monday at the Thompson Federal Building, 400 S. Virginia St., Reno. As names are read, people will be invited to plant flags as they wish. Those who have died fighting in Afghanistan will be added this year. Call 784-1945.

Outdoor activities

- Lahontan Reservoir " The lake's level is higher this year than during Memorial Day last year. Tabitha Coughlin, park aide, said all the boat ramps are back into the water, but urges boaters to consider the underwater hazards, usually in shallow waters near the shore.

Entrance fee is $5, camping fee is $10, boating fee is $10, boating and camping fee is $15 and an annual entrance fee is $60. For the complete fee schedule, visit www.parks.nv.gov/lah.

Fishing licenses are available locally at Naval Air Station Fallon's recreation department, Long's/CVS Pharmacy, Frontier Liquor, Raley's and Wal-Mart. The basic fishing license for anglers ages 16 and up is $29, junior licenses for children ages 12 to 15 are $13. Trout stamps or second rod stamps are $10 each.

- Sand Mountain " With nice weather predicted, Bureau of Land Management District Ranger Stan Zuber expects anywhere from 3,000 to 7,000 people at the mega sand dune located 25 miles east of Fallon this weekend.

Although there is a law enforcement agreement with the Churchill County Sheriff's Department, BLM plans to bring in extra rangers for the busy weekend and will staff the fee kiosk the entire weekend.

Seven-day passes at Sand Mountain are $40 and annual passes " good from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30 regardless of the time purchased " are $90. Passes may be purchased with exact cash or checks at Sand Mountain's fee kiosk. For information, visit www.nv.blm.gov/carson/Recreation/Rec_SandMtn.htm.

- Pyramid Lake " The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, which operates the lake, expects large crowds because of good weather. Permits are required for day use, camping, boating and jet skis. Pyramid Lake issues its own fishing permits as well.

Permit prices: day use is $6, camping is $9, daily boating is $9, daily jet skis is $19, daily fishing is $9 for adults and $5 daily for youth ages 12 to 18. For information visit www.plpt.nsn.us.

- Rye Patch Reservoir " Entrance fee is $4, camping fee is $10, boating fee is $8, camping and boating together is $14. For the complete fee schedule, visit www.parks.nv.gov/rp.htm.

- Ft. Churchill camping " Free entrance to Buckland Station, $1 museum entrance fee and children ages 12 and under are free, $4 entrance fee, $10-12 camping fee depending upon the campground. Visit www.parks.nv.gov.

- Reno Aces " The Reno Aces have a slew of home games scheduled through Thursday. The Aces will play the New Orleans Zephyrs today, Saturday and Sunday, with Friday and Saturday games at 6:05 p.m. and Sunday's game at 1:05 p.m.

The Aces continue its eight-home game schedule with games Monday through Thursday against the Oklahoma City RedHawks. Monday's and Tuesday's games start at 6:05 p.m. with Wednesday's and Thursday's games at 11:35 a.m.
