Ten area swimmers representing Carson and Douglas high schools gather at the University of Nevada's Lombardi Rec Center for the 4A state swimming and diving championships. Action gets started at 2 p.m. today.
Haley VonSchottenstein of Douglas gives the area the best possible shot at a gold medal. The junior is ranked first in the 100 breastroke at 1:06.67 and second in the 50 free at 24.67.
Douglas also is seeded first in the 200 free relay and fourth in the 200 medley relay. VonSchottenstein teams with Taylor Killion, Michelle Foreman and Mary Smitten in both races.
Douglas' other entry is Eric VanBeuge in the 100-yard backstroke. VanBeuge is seeded last at 58.15, and will most likely to have to shave about five seconds off that tiem to finish in the top three.
Carson is represented by its 200-yard medley relay team of Jacob Cornwell, Tim Grunert, Kevin Dyer and Paul Chang. The Senators are seeded fifth at 1:43.59. Carson also has its 400-yard free relay group, which includes Dyer, Jacob Branco, Chang and Cornwell. The Senators are seeded sixth at 3:25.68, and are an outside shot at making the top three.
Dyer is entered in the 200 and 500-yard free races. He is seeded seventh in the 200 at 1:47.16 and sixth in the 500 at 4:54.91.
Chang is competing in the 50 and 100-free races. He is ranked sixth in the 40 (22.54) and seventh in the 100 at 49.66.
