Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels: Honor our veterans Monday

The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the Capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.

Silver Dollar: This long holiday weekend is more than a kickoff to the summer season and a time to fire up the barbecue. Don't forget that Memorial Day represents a time to honor those fallen men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country.

With U.S. troops engaged in fighting on two fronts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the pain of those sacrifices remains very real for thousands of Americans across the country. There are several area events scheduled to honor our veterans, including noon to 1 p.m. Monday at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City.

Wooden Dollar/Silver Nickel: Good news is the first phase of the $5 million State Route 28 resurfacing project was completed on schedule Friday. It had completely shut down eight miles of Route 28 between Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor the past three weeks between 7 p.m. Sunday and 5 a.m. Friday.

Bad news is motorists, including commuter traffic between the lake and the Carson City area, will get only a brief reprieve from roadwork on that stretch of highway.

The project's second phase begins Tuesday and involves one lane of traffic control until July 2 from Sand Harbor to the East Lakeshore Boulevard intersection in Incline Village. Motorists should expect up to 30-minute delays at times, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

NDOT will maintain a similar work schedule as phase one, with plans to keep the road open without delays on the weekend.

Silver Dollar: Positive signs in the local real estate market, no matter how small, deserve to be noted.

According to data filed with the Carson City Assessor's Office earlier this month, home sales in the city have shown a slow but steady increase in activity since January.

Following six sales the first month of the year, the number increased to 15 in February, 16 in March and 17 through mid-April, according to the most recent data.
