A fire broke out in the wagon factory of J. W. Young, on the corner of Carson and Fifth streets, destroying the property and the blacksmith shop adjoining. Then at the same time a fire broke out in the blacksmith shop of A. W. Benson, brother-in-law of Young, whose shop was situated diagonally opposite. Fire was work of one or more incendiaries.

The commission made a report that was so horrible that the Republican leaders suppressed it, except for one page. The Ormsby House was auctioned to a lone bidder for $2 million, but its operator said the bid was too low for approval from the bank holding receivership. The auction drew a crowd of 100.
