130 Years Ago

Henry R. Mighels, editor and proprietor of the Morning Appeal died at his residence, born in 1830 in Maine. Came to Carson in 1865 to edit the Appeal. He once said, "The history of that paper is my own, since that time." He leaves a wife, Nellie Mighels, and four young children.

100 Years Ago

Peter Peratto, an Italian, was struck near the track while crossing the Virginia and Truckee track. He is now in the Sisters' Hospital. Ed Robb said the man was just crossing the track and looking toward the west when the engine which was backing up did not sound a bell or whistle.

70 Years Ago

Mint Building secured: Governor E. P. Carville announced that he will soon appoint a commission provided by the Amodei bill at the 1939 legislative session. He made it plain that everything cannot be done at once " that the museum must grow gradually from a small beginning and expand.

Jobs should be plentiful this summer according to Carolyn Wilson, Branch Manger of Job Opportunities in Nevada. JOIN works with 14- and 15-year-old first time workers who might have difficulty finding employment in a competitive job market due to age and inexperience. With federal funds JOIN receives, it pays youth to work in public and non-profit agencies.

Taxable sales jumped 14.5 percent in March which means sales are up 9.5 percent and getting stronger every month since January in double digits.
