The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
Silver dollar: Let's all pool our money and give 145 silver dollars, one for each year of Nevada's statehood, to every member of the Nevada Day board of directors: President Reg Creasey, Ken Hamilton, Ken Brown, Keri Putnam, Bernie Allen, Bobby Bean, Star Anderson, Joy Evans, Lori Urbani, Tim Nolte, Kathy McClintock and Joe DiLonardo - and to the untold number of volunteers and support staff who help to make Saturday's parade and activities the biggest party of the year for Carson City. The amount of work and planning that goes into pulling this off year after year is beyond comprehension. We're just glad that they do it so we can sit back in our lawn chairs and watch the parade, eat some chili, gawk at the beard contestants, get misty-eyed at the fly-over and be reminded of why it's great to be a Nevadan. Thanks to all who make it happen.
Silver dollar: To the Carson High School varsity football team, who gave us a great victory on Thursday against the Douglas Tigers. The 34-6 win in front of about 7,000 fans snapped a seven-year losing streak for Carson against its rivals to the south. Now it's on to the regional playoffs, where North Valleys will be the next to get filibustered by the Senator's running game. Go Carson!
Silver dollar: To the Douglas Tigers, who played valiantly and lost with dignity. We'll be pulling for you in the playoffs - might a rematch for the north title be in our future?
Silver dollar: And finally, no commentary in this space could adequately express the respect and admiration we hold for Jack C. Davis, who died last week at 83. A lifetime promoter of education and athletics, Davis was the first president of Western Nevada Community College. Under his tenure, the college expanded to Fallon, Gardnerville and Elko, and he was instrumental in getting the funding for the observatory that bears his name. His legacy will be felt for generations to come.
