Countdown to Christmas!
How long until Christmas? 49 days. Here is a quick list of organizations that need assistance at Christmas time this year:
Advocates to End Domestic Violence: Currently at full capacity. This means all of the 51-bed shelter is being utilized. Advocates provide a wide variety of services designed to protect and support battered women and their children in the community. You can help sponsor someone from the shelter by calling 775-883-7654.
Ron Wood Family Resource Center: Joyce Buckingham, executive director of the center, says they are accepting any new toys for the annual Toys for Tots program. For more information, call 775-884-2269.
Drop off areas participating this year include Carson City Toyota, Harley Davidson, Les Schwab Tire (both locations), United Blood Services, Walmart (both locations), Applebee's, Carson Lanes Bowling Center, Casino Fandango and Slot World. Give them a call if you would like your business included as a drop-off area.
RSVP and Local Convalescent Center Adopt A Senior for Christmas Program: Please remember we have many seniors in town who have to live on a strict budget and need a little holiday cheer as well as the children. You can call Janice Ayres, executive director at 775-687-4680, ext. 2 and call any of the local convalescents homes and ask if there is a senior in need of adopting. A single pair of sleepers or some lotion goes a long way.
Division of Child and Family Services - Foster Children Adoption Trees: Remember to keep your eyes open for Starbucks Christmas trees, which will be going up soon. Grab a tag and shop for a child who has been placed in foster care. If you want to adopt a child for Christmas, call Marylee Mockford at 775-687-4943.
F.I.S.H and Advocates Annual Share Your Holiday Food Drive: Also remember to sign up and help, or stocking up on food items for the annual food drives that helps both shelters for the entire year. Collection is 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Governor's Mansion from needed items: can goods, dry goods, paper products and detergents.
