(AP) - Jack Schofield, a Nevada regent and former state lawmaker, has announced his intent to run against Republican Rep. Dean Heller for Nevada's 2nd Congressional District seat.
The 86-year-old Schofield is the first Democrat to announce a campaign against Heller, who is seeking a third term in next year's election.
Schofield made his announcement Wednesday in Reno following a Veterans Day parade, wearing his Army uniform from 1944.
Schofield lives in Las Vegas, just outside the largely rural congressional district that encompasses most of the state.
He is currently in the middle of his second term on the Nevada Board of Regents. He served two terms in the state Assembly and one in the Senate in the 1970s.
