Hello skiers and snowboarders.
Winter is just around the corner, and with the prediction of El Nino, it is time to plan your family's winter weekend schedule, update your equipment and register for programs to keep the kids challenged and passionate about mountain sports as the temperatures drop.
The Heavenly Ski & Snowboard Foundation (HSSF) is a local, nonprofit organization providing winter sport, and competition, programs for children 5-18 in alpine, freestyle, freeride and snowboarding. Programs run weekly from the first of December though the first of April.
HSSF's goal is to "make it possible for every interested young athlete in the local and surrounding communities to take advantage of the programs offered and advance at their specific endeavor in a supportive and healthy environment to all levels, regardless of economic background."
For kids who have some time on the slopes and want to take it to the next level, and/or compete in their chosen sport, the HSSF program options include: One-day (Sundays), part-time (Sat/Sun) and full-time (weekday, weekends and holidays). Prices vary accordingly.
The one-day program will introduce athletes to all terrain, including park, bumps, gate training while they learn proper technique and skill progression. Part- and full-time programs are geared for the skiers/boarders who want to improve their skills and compete at local and/or national levels.
New this season is the comeback of our freeride program - with a twist. Athletes in the Freeride program will learn how to slide rails and jump. They also will be taught the fundamental of proper turns, how to ski gates, how to excel in skier-cross, ski moguls, powder and big mountains.
