Kentucky handles Morehead State

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky freshman Eric Bledsoe scored 24 points while starting in place of John Wall, and the fourth-ranked Wildcats opened the John Calipari era with a 75-59 win over Morehead State on Friday night.

Patrick Patterson added 20 points - including his first career 3-pointer - to go with 12 rebounds, and Darnell Dodson had 15 points as Kentucky (1-0) pulled away in the second half.

Kenneth Faried led Morehead State (0-1) with 17 points, but the defending Ohio Valley Conference champions couldn't keep up even with Wall on the bench. The highly touted recruit sat out as part of an NCAA suspension for accepting improper benefits from his AAU coach.

Wall is expected to play Monday when the Wildcats host Miami (Ohio).

No. 1 Kansas 101, Hofstra 65

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Xavier Henry hit five 3-pointers and scored 27 points to set a school freshman record, and the top-ranked Jayhawks wore down overmatched Hofstra.

Sherron Collins added 23 points and Cole Aldrich had 11 points and eight rebounds, lifting the Jayhawks to their 42nd straight win at Allen Fieldhouse.

Charles Jenkins had 23 points to lead Hofstra, was 5 of 21 from 3-point range. No. 2 Michigan St. 97, Florida Gulf Coast 58

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Durrell Summers scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half, and Kalin Lucas scored 21 to lead the Spartans.

Summers' go-ahead dunk on an alley oop sparked a 17-4 run that put Michigan State (1-0) in control. The Spartans have won 40 in a row against nonconference teams at the Breslin Center.

Anthony Banks led the Eagles (0-1) with 10 points.

No. 5 Villanova 84, Fairleigh Dickinson 61

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Corey Stokes scored 20 points, Corey Fisher added 13 and the Wildcats overcame a sloppy first half and a poor game from Scottie Reynolds.

Reynolds managed just eight points on 2-of-10 shooting for Villanova (1-0), which is coming off a trip to the Final Four. Antonio Pena added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Terence Grier scored 17 points and Mike Scott had 15 to lead Fairleigh Dickinson (0-1).

No. 7 Purdue 89, Cal State Northridge 64

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Robbie Hummel scored 17 points, JaJuan Johnson had 15 and the Boilermakers coasted to an easy win in their season opener.

Freshman reserve D.J. Byrd scored 13 and Chris Kramer added 11 points for Purdue, which was playing without starting point guard Lewis Jackson. He was serving a one-game suspension for participating in an unspecified NCAA-sanctioned event without approval from his coach.

Kevin Menner led Northridge with 18 points.

No. 9 Duke 96, UNC Greensboro 62

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Kyle Singler scored 20 points in the first half, and the Blue Devils won easily even without suspended guard Nolan Smith and injured forward Mason Plumlee.

Jon Scheyer added 18 points for the Blue Devils (1-0), the ACC's preseason co-favorites with North Carolina, who improved to 28-2 in openers under Mike Krzyzewski.

Ben Stywall had 19 points to lead UNC Greensboro (0-1).

No. 12 Connecticut 75, William & Mary 66

STORRS, Conn. (AP) - Jerome Dyson scored 27 points in his first regular-season game since tearing the meniscus in his right knee last season, leading the Huskies to the victory.

The senior guard also had eight assists and four steals, Stanley Robinson added 17 points and freshman Alex Oriakhi had eight points and 10 rebounds for UConn (1-0).

William & Mary kept the game close by hitting 13 shots from 3-point range, and got within four in the second half. Quinn McDowell led the Tribe (0-1) with 20 points and David Schneider and Danny Sumner each added 14.

No. 20 Georgetown 74, Tulane 58

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Greg Monroe returned home and finished with game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds, and the Hoyas cruised past the Green Wave.

Austin Freeman scored 16 points for the Hoyas (1-0). Jason Clark had 13 and Chris Wright 11.

Kris Richard scored all but two of his team-high 15 points in the second half for Tulane (0-1). David Booker had 14 points, but scored just four in the second half.

No. 23 Illinois 96, SIU Edwardsville 69

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Freshman guard Brandon Paul scored 22 points and the Illini scored their most points in a game since 2004.

Paul and D.J. Richardson were the first freshmen to start for Illinois since Brian Randle in 2003. The Illini's Jeff Jordan was forced to sit out the game as part of a two game suspension by the NCAA for playing in an unsanctioned event during the summer.

Denykco Bowles, Aamir McCleary and Stephen Jones led Edwardsville (0-1) with 13 each.

No. 24 Clemson 84, Presbyterian 41

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Freshman Noel Johnson hit four 3-pointers, and the Tigers hit 14 from beyond the arc as a team in the season opener for both teams.

Johnson finished with 12 points, and David Potter, Andre Young and Bryan Narcisse each hit a pair of 3-pointers. Even big Trevor Booker, the Tigers' 6-foot-7 force in the middle, got into the act by rattling home an off-balance heave from the deep right corner.

It was too much for Presbyterian, which is in just its third season of Division I basketball. Zach Faircloth led the Blue Hose with 14 points.

No. 25 Minnesota 87, Tennessee Tech 50

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Lawrence Westbrook scored 22 points and keyed a big second-half run to help the Gophers pull away from overmatched Tennessee Tech.

Freshman Rodney Williams scored 14 and senior Damian Johnson had nine points for the Gophers (1-0), while Colton Iverson blocked four shots and grabbed seven boards.

Elijah Muhammad led Tennessee Tech (0-1) with 12 points, while Kevin Murphy added 10.
