Las Vegas to cut 19 workers to trim budget deficit

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas plans to lay off 19 employees, and City Council members are beginning to consider ways to deal with a projected budget shortfall of more than $400 million over the next five years.

City Manager Betsy Fretwell is due Wednesday to discuss with the City Council other options to deal with decreasing tax receipts.

Fretwell told workers in a letter Friday that the layoffs will help trim $8 million from the city budget by the end of January.
