Safari zoo starts winter food drive

Sierra Safari Zoo has completed its 2009 season and now is looking toward the community to make the Winter Food Drive a success.

Every year the zoo closes in November for winter. During the five months the zoo is closed there is no revenue to support the animals and the Winter Food Drive has become an extremely important part of keeping the zoo running.

The zoo needs to raise around $13,000 for each of the five months it is closed. Donations are tax deductible.

Though small, Sierra Safari has become the largest zoo in Nevada, with more than 200 animals of of more than 40 different species. It is run by animal-loving volunteers with help from the sheriff's community work program.
