Happy Thanksgiving this week. May you all have something or someone to be thankful for ... family, friends, garbagemen, Carol's handyman brother Marty, our servicemen and women, etc. Give them all thanks while you can, because life can throw you a curve ball at any time.

Christina Gouem, the 13-year-old young lady who passed away at Shaw Middle School in Reno last week, was the only child of Tatiana (who works at UNR) and Denis Gouem (who was on duty at Renown when they brought her in). They emigrated from France, and had become American citizens just last year. A fund has been set up at any Bank of the West branch to help with her medical and funeral expenses under "Friends of Christina." As an aside, a bank in Reno was contacted, but they wanted money up front to set up a memorial fund, so the Carson City branch of Bank of the West, with the help of their employees, Debbie and Matt, gladly put it together at no cost to Christina's family and friends. We're thankful for that, too.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Bradshaw family, whose son was killed in that Careflight helicopter crash Saturday on the flight back to Susanville. Jim was the pilot and oldest son of Ann and Jim Bradshaw of Carson City. May they find solace in their faith and the fact that he flew to save the lives of others.

We also have another fund for you to consider. Nate Clark, son of Kitty Clark (who works for DETR), was diagnosed with "giant cell osteo sarcoma," and, to save him, has had to have his arm and shoulder removed. He is still going through chemotherapy, but his prognosis is much, much better. His friends have set up an account at the Greater Nevada Credit Union, #903416, and ask that you consider helping Nate at this very difficult time.

We are so thankful to all of you!

Finally ... some good news. Melody Reeves-Crouch is 1 year old; Father Chuck Durante and Terry Beauchamp are not. But happy birthday to all of them. A get well wish goes out to Geri Ruggeri; and a congrats goes to Bob Reid for his Silver Pen Award from the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame. Congrats also to Linda and Ron Bowman (and their son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Melissa) on the birth of their granddaughter, Georgia Margaret. Well done. And a happy anniversary to Tina and Giles Galhaut (of ZBistro fame).

On the entertainment side, the Pinkerton Ballet Theatre will present its 21st production of the "Nutcracker" at 7 p.m. Nov. 27-28 and 2 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Community Center. It will feature certain local "celebrities" (do the names Sheriff Furlong, District Attorney Rombardo and Mayor Crowell ring a bell?) playing Mother Gigogne (a sight not to be forgotten, we're sure). For additional information and tickets, call 220-4633. This should not be missed, since there are many wonderful professional dancers who began their art at Pinkerton's. It also features Carson City's own Jeffery Scott as Drosselmeyer.

From the Thanksgiving Jokes page (yup, there is one): "A little boy was asked what he was thankful for this Thanksgiving. 'I'm glad I'm not a turkey,' he replied." "A mama turkey was chastising her naughty son. 'If your Papa knew about this, he'd turn over in his gravy.'" Aren't you glad we didn't have room for more?
