ELKO - City employees in Elko will soon be prohibited from using cell phones while driving.

The Elko City Council has banned the practice beginning Jan. 1.

The city's existing policy "strongly discouraged" city employees from using cell phones while behind the wheel.

Elko police say about half of all traffic accidents that they handle are related to inattentive driving.

They say that includes talking on cell phones, changing the radio and searching for a CD.

A new Elko police policy will require officers to use radios for communication while driving unless the communication system is down.
