RENO (AP) - The Nevada Highway Patrol has begun putting troopers in big-rig trucks to spot motorists who follow too closely or cut in front of tractor-trailers.

NHP Capt. Julie Johnson says the statewide "Badge on Board" program aims to improve safety and cut the number of truck crashes.

It follows a one-day pilot program in 2008 that involved troopers issuing 18 citations in Northern Nevada.

Officials say troopers in the cabs of trucks will summon officers in marked patrol vehicles to stop and issue citations to motorists.
