PITTSBURGH (AP) - Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby watched the Penguins raise their Stanley Cup banner, then got the NHL champions off to a familiar start by scoring their first two goals during a 3-2 victory over the rival New York Rangers on Friday night.
Crosby and Tyler Kennedy scored 1:08 apart in the second period to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead and allow them to withstand Marian Gaborik's first goal for the Rangers, the only scoring during the third period. Pittsburgh has won all four games against the Rangers at home the last two seasons.
Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves for Pittsburgh.
Chris Drury also scored for New York.
Flyers 2, Hurricanes 0
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Ray Emery made 28 saves in his Philadelphia debut, leading the Flyers past Carolina for his ninth career shutout.
Jeff Carter and Mike Richards scored power-play goals 22 seconds apart for Philadelphia. The Flyers put their first two shots of the second period past Cam Ward and held on for their eighth win in 10 meetings with Carolina.
Playing two days after signing a six-year, $37.8 million contract, Ward stopped 25 shots for Carolina. The Hurricanes came up empty on all eight of their power-play chances and were shut out in their opener for the first time in franchise history.
Panthers 4, Blackhawks 3, SO
HELSINKI (AP) - Finnish defender Ville Koistinen scored the winning shootout goal for Florida, and Tomas Vokoun stopped Chicago's Patrick Sharp on the final attempt.
Koistinen also scored in regulation in the first NHL game in Finland. Michael Frolik and David Booth added regulation goals for Florida, and Steven Reinprecht had a shootout goal for the Panthers.
Chicago's Patrick Kane scored the first NHL goal on Finnish ice and added an assist. Sharp and Dustin Byfuglien also scored for Chicago, and Jonathan Toews had a shootout goal for the Blackhawks.
Blues 4, Red Wings 3
STOCKHOLM (AP) - Paul Kariya scored twice and B.J. Crombeen added a goal in a 5:05 span of the second period for St. Louis.
Jay McClement also scored for the Blues. Jonathan Ericsson, Kirk Maltby and Ville Leino scored to help Detroit take a 3-1 lead.
The Blues spoiled the homecoming for Detroit's seven Swedes. Detroit was listed as the home team and the pro-Detroit sellout crowd of 13,850 at Ericsson Globe arena gave the Red Wings the biggest ovation during pregame presentations.
