Free flu shots will be given at the CC Flu Vaccine Clinics on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The walk-in clinic will be at the Senior Center, 911 Beverly Dr. (not just for seniors, but for everyone), and the drive-thru clinic will be at the Nevada National Guard, 2460 Fairview Drive. Such a deal ... you don't even have to get out of your car ... and it's FREE! This is NOT the swine flu shot (it comes out later this month), but the regular one. For additional info, or to volunteer, call 887-2190.

We are holding a "Closing Night Party" for those who cared about Roger Maillard. It's at the Brewery Arts Center on Sunday, Oct. 11 from 2-4 p.m. (old folks can't stay up much later). It's casual, and if you want to bring a "finger food," please do so, but that's not a requisite. Drinks will be provided. Roger wanted a good party, so we hope to see you there and tell "Roger" stories.

E.B. Casteel sent us a collection of a "bunch of words that seemed in need of help, definition-wise." Here are some of our personal faves: "Absolution: use of this word implies that a second party, entity or group can erase or forgive your stupid mistakes. No way! You screwed up. Bite the bullet." "Airplane: A device that is kept aloft by the aerodynamic forces of air and is propelled by excessive fares. Usually parked at or above airfields not accessible by other means of transport. If God had intended for us to fly, She wouldn't have invented the railroad." Ahhhh, things to muse.

Many nice people to mention for various and assorted reasons: John Hurzel at Grandma Hattie's for giving Carolyn a muffin with a candle in it for her b-day; the City of Carson for the great overlays and striping; the State of Nevada (and the Feds) for getting the second part of the freeway done ... now only 1/3 to go; and congratulations to Lisa Tolda on the addition of a granddaughter, Riley, who joined her 16 month old brother, Kaiden, in the family. Congratulations, too, to the Josten family on the marriage of their son, Kelly, to his lovely bride, Becky Elston. And, to the umpteen people having birthdays this week: Amelia Wassner, Kurt Garrett, Ken Cavallero, Debra Hanson, Al Robinson, Tracy McQuay and Mike (aka "Luke") Smith. Candles will definitely be depleted at stores this week. It was also nice to see Mel Cooper dining at Thurman's with his daughter and son-in-law, Vionne and Ron Kipp.

We have been eyeing the bus stops around town and still bemoan the lack of seating for those waiting for the bus (we have even seen some people sitting on the curbs while they wait). Some stops have seating, but most do not. Isn't there some way the prison could make this a "good will" campaign and build some seating for the stops? They have helped local schools and the Susan G. Komen Foundation in the past, whereas, this would help the bus riding public, especially the seniors, students and disabled. Just wondering.

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Foundation will be hosting its 60th anniversary by holding a fundraiser to benefit their Cancer Center at Genoa Lakes Golf Course on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $150, and raffle tickets for great prizes are available at the Gift Shop or by calling 445-5161. It will be a grand soiree, and a great help to the community. The fourth annual "Snapshot Day" will be on Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon to monitor the entire Carson River watershed for "one moment in time," and refreshments will be served. Volunteers and students are needed to join a site team to do this. Please contact Mary Kay Wagner at mkwagner@ndep.nv
.gov for information, or call James Murphy at 888-7889.
