Carson High played without two key players Tuesday night - Samantha Fishburn (swine flu) and Nicole Updegrove (head injury) - but it didn't matter.

The host Senators scored four times in the first 18 minutes en route to a 6-1 win over Bishop Manogue in a Sierra League match.

Carson improved to 7-0-1 in league and 8-0-2 overall heading into Saturday's match at Wooster. The win was Carson's second over the Miners this season.

"We played well," Carson coach Randy Roser said. "We were sluggish on Saturday against South Tahoe (2-0 win). Our passing was better. The balls in behind their defense were superb.

"I thought Taylor Musselman played well and it was nice having Brenda (Luquin) back. She hurt her calf against Galena and then irritated it against Fallon."

Ally Cowan got Carson started on the right track when she beat the Manogue keeper on a kick to the right post 2 minutes, 18 seconds into the contest.

Speedy Arran Rumbaugh made it 2-0 with 8:41 elapsed and barely two minutes later Miriah Tompkins' shot was deflected. Luquin scored in the 18th minute to make it 3-0.

Carson's defense was so tough that Manogue didn't get off its first shot until the 25th minute of the contest, and the Miners managed just four the entire game compared to 13 for the Senators. Roser credited defenders Ashley Turner, Cowan, Natalie Stevens and Emily Field for stellar play.

Field was sick prior to the season, and Tuesday was the first time that she had played extended minutes.

Liza Matley made it 4-0 in the 29th minute when she corralled a loose ball and beat the Manogue keeper.

Luquin made it 5-0 in the 51st minute and then Musselman completed the Senators' scoring in the 71st minute. Manogue finally scored in the 77th minute when goalie Emily Heller failed to handle a corner kick cleanly.

"All the goals we've given up this year have been because of our mistakes in the back," Roser said. "We haven't been giving up shots (goals) when we just get beat on offense."
