Six Mile Canyon Road closure set for Oct. 12-15

Six Mile Canyon Road will be closed to all traffic starting on Monday, through Thursday.

Storey County Public Works crews will be performing bridge work during this time. Motorists are advised to use an alternate route.

Nominations open for arts awards

The Nevada Arts Council and the Office of the Governor invite nominations for the 30th annual Governor's Arts Awards to recognize and honor those Nevadans who add to quality of life today, and ensure a strong cultural legacy for future generations.

Nominees must be current residents of Nevada or an organization/business that works in and for the benefit of Nevada.

Previous recipients of a Governor's Arts Award and current Nevada Arts Council staff, board, contractors or their immediate families are not eligible.

Nomination packets must be received by 5 p.m. Nov. 16. Up to six awards will be given.

CTRH gift shop to hold jewelry sale

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary Gift Shop will hold a jewelry sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 16 in the main lobby of the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, 1600 Medical Parkway, Carson City.

Proceeds will benefit the auxiliary in support of the Regional Medical Center, nursing scholarships and regional health care.

Free trial dance classes offered

The Performing Arts Project of Northern Nevada is offering one free trial dance class Oct. 12 for new students at 2556 Precision Drive, Suite E, Minden.

Anyone wishing to try a class can attend from 4-5:30 p.m. for advanced ballet/pointe or teen/adult ballet from 6-7:30 p.m.

Book time with the computer tutor

Carson City Library now has two computer tutors who will provide free one-hour computer training sessions, between noon and 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Fridays.

These one-on-one sessions will cover the World Wide Web or Microsoft Word (word processing), per the student's request. Sign-ups are required.

Computer tutors volunteer their time to help people learn basic skills. They teach two skills: how to find information (surf) on the World Wide Web and how to word process using Microsoft Word and the various "Wizard" templates, such as building a resume.

Students should know how to use a keyboard. Students may sign up for a total of two one-hour sessions.

The tutors only teach at the Carson City Library and do not provide tutoring at homes or businesses.

Explore the Basque Country at the library

Carson City Library will present Explore the Basque Country at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 in the library auditorium.

Joxe Mallea-Olaetxe, Ph.D., will present the program. Mallea-Olaetxe, a semi-retired instructor of Basque studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, will provide an introduction to Basque history and discuss the practice of aspen carvings in the Basque culture.

He has written two books on the subject, "The Basques of Reno and the Northeastern Sierra, Nevada (Images of America Series)," and "Speaking Through the Aspens."

This Thursday night program is bimonthly and hosts a series of presentations by people from other countries or by those who have traveled to far-away places. Previous countries that have been explored through this popular library program include Hong Kong, Nicaragua, England, Bolivia, Colombia, Vietnam, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Taiwan, the Azores or Portugal, Ethiopia, India, and Afghanistan.

DAR meeting to salute Lincoln

The Battle Born Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, meets at noon Wednesday, Oct 21 at Charley's Grilled Subs in Carson Mall.

The topic of the meeting is "Nevada Salutes President Lincoln." Women interested in volunteer work involving educational issues, patriotism and history are invited to attend. Swing dance into Halloween

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents a Halloween costume dance Oct. 24 at the Brewery Arts Center's Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

Tim Renner will teach a lesson in West Coast swing at 7 p.m. The social dance and costume contest is 8-10:30 p.m. Partners are not required. A lesson is $7 for HSSDC and any swing dance club members or $10 for nonmembers; dance is $7 for swing club members and $10 for nonmembers.
