RENO - Wooster High always makes Carson's life miserable when the boys soccer squads square off, and Saturday's match was no exception.

Raul Gonzalez scored the game's only goal in the 62nd minute to give the Colts a 1-0 upset win over Carson.

Carson, which played without Izzy Lopez, has lost two of its last three matches, falling to 6-2-1 overall.

Carson outshot Wooster 10-9. Carson had a good opportunity in the 56th minute when Brian Duran hit the post on a direct kick. In the 70th minute, Carson was awarded a corner kick and came up empty when Jose Arrendondo made a sprawling save.

Carson coach Nate Brigham was steamed about the loss, and the way his team attacked Wooster's offside trap defense.

"They usually play us very tough (with that defense)," Brigham said. "You want to use a diagonal switch (to attack). Unfortunately, the kids thought that meant doing that every time we got the ball. We dumped the ball every time instead of possessing it.

"It was disappointing that the team showed more emotion after the game than on the field."

Brigham was referring to a couple temper tantrums that took place after the traditional handshakes between teams. In fact, Brigham talked to the media and his family before talking to his team.

Lopez arrived at the game midway through the first half after going through college testing, but never suited up. Obviously the Senators could have used him.

"He didn't fill out the paperwork that you have to do when you aren't going to the game with the team," Brigham said. "I think he thought that he wasn't going to get done in time to play. He didn't even bring his uniform. One player was not going to make the difference. This was like the South Tahoe game. The team that wanted it more won."

Senior midfielder Brian Duran thought that the Senators might have been overconfident.

"We need to get out there and just play," he said. "Against Manogue (second-place team) we went trying to show people what we could do."

Maybe because Wooster was in sixth place, the Senators let their guard down.

GIRLS: CARSON DEF. WOOSTER

RENO - The Senators kept their hold on first place with an easy 10--0 win over the Colts.

Carson is 8-0-1 with Douglas close behind at 7-1-1.

Ashley Turner, Kenzie Tillitt and Natalie Stevens scored two goals apiece while Caitlin Jones, Nicole Updegrove, Taylor Musselman and Arran Rumbaugh added one each.

What's amazing about the Senators' win is that they were scoreless for the first 21 1/2 minutes of the game until Turner scored twice in a span of 2 minutes 17 seconds.

"I don't think anybody was ready to go," Turner said. "Our back people started to move up more.

"Sam (Fishburn) made a nice cross on my first goal. It bounced off one of their players and came to me. The second I don't really remember. I just pushed hard and ran to the ball."

Carson coach Randy Roser blamed the slow start on ball movement, or lack thereof.

"We weren't connecting with the forwards," Roser said. "I gave it 15 minutes to see if they could work it out between themselves. When that didn't happen, we made some personnel changes.

"Then we scored three goals in three minutes. You want to set the tone in the first five minutes (against Wooster). For 20 minutes they were in the game."

After Turner's two scores, Rumbaugh deposited a shot to the far right post in the 24th minute to make it 3-0. Carson made it 4-0 when Updegrove took a pass from Rumbaugh and scored in the 33rd minute.

Stevens got into the scoring act with two goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to make it 6-0. The second score came on a header off a corner kick by Musselman.

Tillitt started in goal and gave way to Emmy Heller in the second half. Heller picked up Carson's only save of the game. Wooster had just one shot on goal.
