An open house Oct. 20 marks the 30th anniversary of the Murphy-Bernardini Regional Juvenile Justice Center in Carson City.

Opened in October 1979, the center came about after a juvenile inmate at the Carson City Jail committed suicide, said chief juvenile probation officer John Simms. Until its creation, juveniles were booked into the adult jail, though they were kept separate from adult inmates, he said.

The open house begins at 4:30 p.m. at 1545 E. Fifth St. The public is invited to tour the detention center and courtroom. At 5:30 p.m. there will be a welcome and introduction of guests. Simms said everyone is welcome.

"This is just a reminder to keep these kids safe and get them through the court system as competently as possible," he said. "Our mission is the same as when we opened - to provide a safe environment, and to protect the community - the kids have just changed a little bit."
