Margaret Steffens
August 21, 1937 - October 20, 2009
Margaret was born in Sparks, Nev., in 1937. She lived in Reno for several years and in Carson City for 36 years. She moved to St. Helena, Calif., in 1998.
She died peacefully at home on October 20, following a year-long fight with pancreatic cancer.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Herb Steffens; two sisters, Elsie Edgington of Sparks, and Patricia Coast of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, Robert Grassini, of Chico, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her native Italian parents, Jenny and Enrico Grassini; two sisters, Gloria and Flora; and a brother Geno.
Margaret attended schools in Sparks and Reno, graduated from Reno High School in 1957, and took various accounting courses at Carson City Community College.
After high school, she worked at the County Court House and as an accountant for a CPA. In Carson City, she worked at Mervyn's and then for the State of Nevada. At Mervyn's, she was often employee of the month.
She took great pride in maintaining her house, but had time to enjoy other interests. She liked to travel, hike, bike, search for Indian artifacts, visit the sea coast, entertain friends with her quick wit, and especially to play bocce. Through bocce, she made many wonderful friends in St. Helena. Margaret was loved by many people and will be missed.
A crypt-side service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, October 26 in the mausoleum at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno. A reception will follow at the restaurant at the Gold and Silver Inn at 790 West 4th Street. It is requested that friends do not send flowers to the funeral, but instead, give flowers to someone in memory of Margaret or make a donation to a charity of choice.
