Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans will host a legal aid fair today in the Gold Dust West Casino on Highway 50.
The fair was scheduled in recognition of National Pro Bono Week, Oct. 25-31.
VARN and Nevada Legal Services provide free civil legal services to low-income people and domestic violence victims in Carson City and surrounding communities.
The fair will offer free legal assistance from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Gold Dust West Juniper Room. Lawyers and paralegals will be available to talk to people about family law matters, debt collection, bankruptcy, small claims actions, wills, estates and landlord/tenant issues, among other subjects.
A spokesman for VARN said a needs assessment commissioned by the Nevada Supreme Court found there are 5,256 people living in poverty in Nevada's rural counties for every legal service provider. It found only six legal aid lawyers in Carson City.
Chief Justice Jim Hardesty will be guest speaker at the fair.
