Cable charge finally put to bed

It was interesting to see that Raiders head coach Tom Cable wasn't charged for his part in an alleged altercation with defensive assistant Randy Hanson.

Hanson claimed that he was attacked from behind and suffered a broken jaw and two broken teeth in the altercation.

Did it happen? Maybe. Maybe not. The only people that really know were the ones in the room - Cable, Hanson, Willie Brown, Lionel Washington and John Marshall, all members of the coaching staff

I said a few days after the incident that this should be handled internally. The fact that this case got so much national attention is laughable.

Besides, do you think Cable will even be around next season after the Raiders go 4-12 or worse this season?

The only reason he would stay is if nobody else would take the job, and I can't imagine anybody in his right mind who would want it.

Carson High's ball-hawking defense has picked off 18 passes this season. With two regular-season games plus playoffs left the Senators could challenge the state record of 26 set by Wooster in 1980.

The soap opera that is the Washington Redskins is an embarrassment to the NFL. Vinny Cerrato and owner Daniel Snyder have tried to force head coach Jim Zorn to resign, but Zorn refuses.

Hiring a coach who has been away from the game (Sherman Lewis) is a slap in the face to Zorn. If the free-spending Snyder wants Zorn out, he should come to some sort of settlement with the coach. Come on Mr. Owner, just admit you made a mistake.

The Redskins said Zorn would be around for the rest of the year. Gee, what a vote of confidence.

What a joke the franchise has become.

Can you believe the heat that Florida State's Bobby Bowden is taking these days? Obviously none of us are privy to what is going on behind closed doors, but I hold Bowden in high esteem. Guys like Bowden and Joe Paterno should decide on their own when they want to leave and not be forced out by idiotic alumni.

Boise State was sixth in the most recent poll by the Associated Press, and if anybody at BSU thinks the Broncos should be higher, think again. The Broncos' schedule needs to be a tad tougher. I have no problem with the Tulsa game, but to schedule UC Davis is a joke. I know why the game was played, BSU coach Chris Petersen played QB for the Aggies. The Broncos should be beneath that sort of game. That's a game you open the season with or not at all. The Broncos need to play up more often.

The Appeal ran a story on Mark Fox and the Georgia Bulldogs recently. Fox has his work cut out for him. The Bulldogs made a nice run at the SEC Tournament last year, but it wasn't near enough to save Dennis Felton's job. Fox has a reputation as a good recruiter, but at Georgia he'll truly be butting heads with the big boys from around the country, going against schools from throughout the BCS, including his former boss Trent Johnson. In the five-plus years I covered the Pack, I would say that Kirk Snyder, Kevinn Pinkney, Nick Fazekas, Todd Okeson and Luke Babbitt were the best recruited players. Ironically, none of them were considered blue-chip recruits save for Babbitt. Initially, Fox lost that battle to Ohio State, though Babbitt de-committed from OSU in favor of Nevada because of his relationship with Fox. No doubt neither Fox or Johnson like the idea of butting heads against each other every year now.
