In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, a group of Curves for Women fitness club members, along with other members of the community, made more than 200 hats for chemotherapy patients in Carson City.
Calling themselves "Caring Curvers," the women knit, crocheted and sewed 235 caps by Friday, with pledges for more by the end of the weekend.
"We far exceeded our goal of 100 hats," said Kathy Jackson, owner of Curves for Women on Winnie Lane. "I'm just so proud of our ladies."
While most Curves members have been touched by cancer through a loved one, many are survivors themselves.
Seven-year cancer survivor Char Menzies crocheted 26 caps, the most completed by any single Caring Curver.
"The best part of this project was watching women who haven't picked up needles in years return to their hobby to make something for a stranger and discover they can make something warm and fun for the people they love, too," she said. "There are a lot of daughters and granddaughters out there who will be getting hats for Christmas."
Future projects up for consideration by Caring Curvers include washcloths to "Clean Up Cancer," a fundraiser for the Curves Relay For Life Team, preemie hats and possible lap robes for seniors.
