Start your week with an Internet biggie: "What is the difference between Bird Flu and Swine Flu? For Bird Flu, you need tweetment; for Swine Flu, you need oinkment. Now aren't you glad you read this column?" [Don't bother writing ... we only "practice" medicine]

Can you get to Hell any faster? Sister Marie put her plants out on her front porch to water them the other day...when she returned, they were GONE. We think stealing from a nun qualifies you to slide down the long slide to perdition PDQ. For shame...

Speaking of Sr. Marie (well, you'll get the picture), St. Teresa's Pre-School has opened up in the old convent on Richmond St. and is going strong. Lots of TLC and paint have gone into the renovation. If you have questions, call them at 882-2079.

Good news: Gardnerville's Ernesto Padilla is back from Afghanistan after being wounded August 12th in that conflict. He is still on active duty, but is recuperating with his wife and daughter. We wish him all the best. We also wish happy birthdays to Christi Schmid and Alexis Lequerica, and a "get well soon" to Amelia Wassner.

Maizie is thrilled with her new Solatube. "Let there be light" in her little bathroom. It was installed by SunEConcepts (call Scott at 883-5770). Justin and Aaron were on time, finished in two hours, and cleaned up afterward. Now, that's a "sunny concept." Not like many contractors or deliveries, who say they'll be there between sunrise and sunset, then don't show up or are there after you've waited all day. Thanks, guys.

With school starting, remind your kids of the Jaycee Lee Dugard story, and have them be careful ... most of those stories are tragic and don't have a happy ending.

The wonderful and lovely Carol Scott is espousing National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month this month. She is a survivor, for which we are delighted. It is such a horrid disease, and took the life of our dear friend, Linda Hall, several years ago. Please, ladies, make sure you are checked out for this.

We have named Dave Pierson of Silver Oak Golf Course, "Mr. Excitement," even though he says he's gone beyond that ... to what, we're not sure. But, you're still exciting to us, Dave (we live sheltered lives). Will Kathy ever forgive us?

Two big golf tournaments coming up soon: WNC will have its 12th annual Golf Classic at Thunder Canyon on Sept. 21 starting at 8 a.m. Call 445-3240 for details, sponsorships and sign ups. It benefits the students, has great prizes and is lots of fun. Call them now. Also, the Carson City Kiwanis Club and the Nevada Day Board will sponsor its 6th annual "Battle Born Golf Tournament" at Empire Ranch on Sept. 27. Call 224-5798 for all the details. Proceeds go to local scholarships and the Nevada Day fund.

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary will be "lunching" on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. to honor past presidents. It will be in WNC's Sarah Winnemuc-ca Hall ... call Rosemary at 882-7057 for details. They also will have a big Bargain Sale at the hospital on Friday at 9 a.m. in the lobby ... quite a "steal" (but not like Sister Marie's).

Have a safe Labor Day weekend, go to the Rib Cook Off (John: Carol is still waiting for her VIP pass), and don't forget our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, or wherever they serve.
