Transportation officials said Wednesday they are confident the second phase of the Carson City Freeway will open by Sept. 25.
aItas coming along really well,a said Nevada Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Magruder. aThe final paving is done. Weare confident weall get it open on the 24th or 25th.a
The $50 million stretch of freeway will pick up where the first phase left off and extend to Fairview Drive, about two miles.
aThe really good news here is that weall have three-quarters of a freeway that will alleviate traffic in downtown Carson City,a Magruder said.
As with the first phase, the second phase will open first to pedestrians and cyclists.
A free 5K run, coordinated by Fleet Feet Carson City, will be at 8 a.m. Sept. 19. Parking will be available at the Gold Dust West Casino, and the race will begin at the onramp there.
Numbers will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis.
After the race, the freeway will then be opened to cyclists and pedestrians until 11 a.m.
aWe want people out there,a Magruder said. aWe want them walking, biking, pushing their kids in strollers. They can bring their dogs.a
