Rory Reid says genealogy wona€™t factor in NV race

(AP) a€" Rory Reid says his run for Nevada governor wona€™t be influenced by whether voters approve or disapprove of his father, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Rory Reid, A Democrat and chairman of the Clark County Commission, was in Northern Nevada on Wednesday.

Reid says he doesna€™t think his a€œgenealogya€ will be a factor in his statewide political ambitions.

Fellow Democrat, Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley of Las Vegas, also is weighing a possible gubernatorial run.

Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons says he will seek a second term. Other potential Republican challengers include Brian Sandoval, who last month announced his resignation from a lifetime appointment as a federal judge effective Sept. 15.

Former state Sen. Joe Heck and former North Las Vegas Mayor Mike Montandon also have announced intentions to run.

Reid to Gibbons: Deny permits for garbage dump

(AP) a€" U.S. Sen. Harry Reid is urging Gov. Jim Gibbons to a€œuse every available authoritya€ to block a proposal by a California company to dispose of tons of household trash from the San Francisco area in a landfill near Winnemucca.

In a letter Wednesday, the Senator Majority Leader called the proposal by Recology a a€œthreat to Nevadaa€™s sovereignty and dignity,a€ and urged Gibbons to direct the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection to deny permits for the project.

Reid said the targeted site is in an active seismic impact zone, and that no engineered barriers or liners would protect the areaa€™s aquifer.
