Shine, Nash help CHS to second-place finish

WASHOE VALLEY - Carson High School's girls golf team, thanks to improved play by Whitney Nash and Elayna Shine, placed second at the Sierra League tournament Tuesday afternoon at Thunder Canyon.

Nash shot a high school-best of 95, four shots better than the previous week. Shine shot 96, a seven-stroke improvement from her previous round. The duo helped Carson to a 396 team score.

Bishop Manogue, led by Alex Phillips' 82, came in first at 355. Damonte Ranch was third at 400 and Galena was fourth at 401.

Katie Livermore shot 100 in her first-ever high school tournament, Lindsay Burroughs had a 105. Megan Justice 107 and Nicole Strickland had a non-scoring 115.

"I'm pleased with our showing," said CHS coach Terry Gingell. "I'm pleased with the progress we're making."

Carson returns to action next Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Arrowcreek Country Club.

VOLLEYBALL:

REED DEFEATS CARSON

SPARKS - Reed knocked off Carson 25-20, 17-25, 19-25, 25-19, and 15-9 Tuesday in a non-league match.

The loss dropped Carson to 2-7 overall.

Carson, which had a 2-1 lead, lost the last two games. In the deciding fifth game, the Senators made 13 errors.

"It was ugly," said Justin Malley, Carson's second-year head coach. "We had a lot of ups and downs. We had some quality plays and then we had plays that we forgot we were a quality volleyball team. Reed stayed focused when we didn't."

Angela Augusta led Carson with 11 kills and three aces. Bailey Valente had 10 digs, four aces and 18 assists. Alyson Christl had six aces and 15 digs, Jeanette Van Sickle finished with six kills, four aces and three blocks, and Brittany Wyatt had 18 digs.

Carson opens Sierra League play Thursday at South Tahoe.

VOLLEYBALL:

DOUGLAS DEFEATS DAYTON

MINDEN - Douglas rolled to a tough 25-18, 25-27, 25-21 and 25-23 victory over Dayton in a non-league match.

Erin Allison led Douglas with nine kills and two aces, Emily Garcia added eight kills and nine blocks, Breanna White finished with seven kills, three blocks and four digs, Christine Dupuis contributed five digs and five kills and Jourdan Burke added six kills and four blocks.

G. TENNIS:

MANOGUE BEATS CARSON

RENO - Bishop Manogue knocked off Carson 10-8 in a Sierra League match.

Alex Fallon, Ashley Saarem and Emma Kortemeier each went 1-2 in singles.

Carson enjoyed a 5-3 advantage in doubles, as Hannah Dudley and Emily Collins won two of their three sets as did Alyssa Corda and Hannah Shaw.

B. SOCCER:

DOUGLAS TOPS WHITTELL

ZEPHYR COVE - Edgar Arceo scored two goals and added an assist to lead Douglas High's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Whittell in a non-league match.

Justin Draper scored for Douglas, which also had an own goal.

The win moved Douglas to 3-2-1 heading into Saturday's match at Galena.

G. SOCCER:

REED, SENATORS TIE

SPARKS - Reed and Carson battled to a 1-1 in a non-league soccer match. The tie dropped Carson to 1-0-1 overall.
