RSVP volunteers will distribute surplus food products to the needy Sept. 25 at the Community Center in Carson City.
Organizer Rosemary Smith said the commodities distribution takes place every two months and provides a variety of foods to those in need. All of the food is surplus products supplied by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They range from dehydrated potatoes, pasta and beans to canned goods and juices.
She said 11 different products are on this month's list including, for the first time in years, cheese.
"We've served as many as 380 households," she said.
The commodities program provides what Smith described as "a truckload" of food that will arrive early Friday morning. It will be unloaded into the community center gymnasium by volunteers from the Nevada National Guard. She said RSVP has managed the program for some 20 years.
The doors open at 7 a.m. and needy families will be served until 11 a.m.
Smith said any food remaining when the doors close will be donated to FISH.
