Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare said Friday that a national shortage of protective face masks has affected local supplies.

Face mask supplies at Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare are critically low. To ensure the safety of patients and staff, Carson Tahoe is initiating steps that will ensure supplies last until new shipments arrive.

Until further notice:

• Unnecessary visitation of hospitalized patients is discouraged.

• Facemasks will be distributed on an "as needed" basis at all Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare facilities including the medical center and outpatient facilities.

• The public should follow standard influenza precautions, including scrupulous hand washing and receiving flu shots.
