LAS VEGAS (AP) - Sen. Harry Reid writes in his autobiography that a late Nevada congressman told him the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was "probably a good thing."

However, the son of the longtime Nevada congressman, Walter Baring, insists his father never would have said such a thing.

Jeff Baring, 55, says Reid had a reason to embellish the conversation: Walter Baring was a conservative Democrat at odds with Reid who endorsed his Republican opponent in a 1974 race that Reid lost.

Reid's office says he won't debate a person who didn't witness the private conversation.
