Yankees 4, Red Sox 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Andy Pettitte and the New York Yankees wrapped up the AL East title and home-field advantage throughout the postseason, beating the Boston Red Sox 4-2 Sunday for their 100th win of the year.

Hideki Matsui's go-ahead single in the sixth inning energized the damp fans and put them on notice that a party was coming. The first real celebration at the new Yankee Stadium began with a most familiar scene - Mariano Rivera on the mound, closing out another clinching victory.

The Yankees won their first division title since 2006 and, after missing the playoffs last year, let loose with wild champagne sprays in the locker room. Several players wore goggles to protect against the sting.

Plastic sheets covered the high-tech clubhouse, outfitted with computer screens at every stall and flat-screen televisions overhead.

All alone in first place since July 21, the team with the best record in the majors can now spend the final week resting its players and setting up the playoff rotation.

Despite the defeat, the Red Sox remain in firm control of the wild-card race. Their magic number is two to beat out Texas for the final playoff spot.

Mark Teixeira and Melky Cabrera homered for New York. Pettitte (14-7) outpitched Paul Byrd (1-3), and Rivera finished for his 44th save in 46 chances.

The Yankees finished 9-9 against Boston this year after losing the first eight matchups.

Royals 4, Twins 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Zack Greinke pitched out of trouble for seven innings to bolster his AL Cy Young Award chances and Yuniesky Betancourt hit a three-run homer, helping Kansas City win its home finale against Minnesota.

Greinke (16-8) worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the third and escaped two other tight spots to drop his major league-best ERA to 2.06. Joakim Soria got six outs, inducing a groundout by Joe Mauer with two on in the ninth for his 29th save in 32 chances.

Minnesota remained two games behind the first-place Tigers in the AL Central. The teams begin a four-game series Monday night in Detroit.

The Twins went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position against Greinke, who beat Minnesota for the first time in seven starts. He is 5-0 with a 0.73 ERA over his last seven outings and has allowed one run or less in 17 of 32 starts this season.

Francisco Liriano (5-13) was pulled after 45 pitches in his first start since Aug. 17.

White Sox 8, Tigers 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Carlos Quentin hit a three-run homer in his second straight game, rookie Daniel Hudson earned his first major league victory and Chicago beat Detroit for its third win in 11 games.

Hudson (1-1) outpitched All-Star Edwin Jackson (13-8) over six solid innings, and Quentin broke it open with a drive to right that capped a four-run eighth and made it 8-2.

The Tigers had won five of six and got off to a good start when Chicago resident Curtis Granderson set a club record with his 24th career leadoff homer. But instead of another shot of momentum, they got a dose of disappointment heading into their big series with Minnesota.

Matt Thornton got four outs for his third save.

Angels 7, Athletics 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Kendry Morales homered and drove in three runs, and Los Angeles snapped its first four-game losing streak of the season by beating Oakland.

Morales had three hits and Mike Napoli also homered for the Angels, who blew most of an early five-run lead before hanging on. Their first victory since last Monday, coupled with Texas' loss to Tampa Bay, reduced Los Angeles' magic number to two for clinching its third straight AL West title.

Texas comes to Anaheim on Monday for a four-game series, and the Angels can wrap up their fifth division crown in six years with one victory.

Joe Saunders (15-7) pitched six scoreless innings before getting chased in the seventh. Brian Fuentes earned his 45th save, reclaiming the major league lead.

Edgar Gonzalez (0-4) remained winless in six starts for the Athletics.

Rays 7, Rangers 6

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Fernando Perez drove home the go-ahead run with a safety squeeze in the ninth inning and Tampa Bay overcame a five-run deficit to spoil Texas' home finale.

The Rangers led 5-0 when Brandon McCarthy threw his last pitch with two outs in the eighth, after an error by third baseman Chris Davis extended the inning. Four relievers faltered after that.

Ben Zobrist hit a two-run single in the eighth and another in the ninth for the Rays, who avoided their second sweep in Texas this season.

Nelson Cruz and Marlon Byrd homered for Texas.

Randy Choate (1-0) got the win and Lance Cormier earned his second save. Frank Francisco (2-3) took the loss.

Blue Jays 5, Mariners 4

TORONTO (AP) - Pinch-hitter Adam Lind had a tying RBI single in the eighth inning and Rod Barajas followed with a go-ahead double, helping Toronto rally past Seattle.

The Blue Jays grabbed the lead with three runs in the eighth one day after Lind homered twice, including a game-winning solo drive in the 10th inning.

Brian Wolfe (2-2) was the winner in Toronto's home finale and Shawn Camp earned his first save since 2006 with Tampa Bay.

Matt Tuiasosopo hit his first career home run, one of four solo shots by the Mariners. Kenji Johjima, Franklin Gutierrez and Mike Sweeney also went deep.

Ryan Rowland-Smith (4-4) allowed five runs and seven hits in seven-plus innings.

Indians 9, Orioles 0

CLEVELAND (AP) - Kelly Shoppach hit a three-run homer, David Huff pitched eight strong innings and Cleveland extended Baltimore's skid to 10 games.

The Orioles have scored 29 runs during the losing streak, which matches their 10-game last September.

Asdrubal Cabrera tied a career high with four hits and drove in three runs as Cleveland swept a three-game series for the first time since July 24-26 at Seattle. The Indians entered the weekend with 11 straight losses, one short of the 78-year-old franchise record.

Huff (11-8) allowed five singles and two walks to improve to 6-2 in eight starts since Aug. 9.

Shoppach's drive capped Cleveland's six-run first off Chris Tillman (2-5).
