Hoping the mayor of a gang-riddled Northern California town will have some insight into how to combat gang violence in the Capital city, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce is hosting a symposium next week with Salinas, Calif., Mayor Dennis Donahue as the keynote speaker.
Facing Reality: Gangs in Carson City will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Carson City Nugget.
Speakers also will include Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong and District Attorney Neil Rombardo.
The cost is $20 per person. Reservations required; call 882-1565.
"I think it is critical that everybody in the state and indeed throughout the country understand this is much more of a social crises situation than people realize," said Donahue, elected mayor of Salinas in 2006. "This is the equivalent of domestic terrorism."
"We know what to do to combat it, it's just a question of if the community will muster the will to fund it and commit to the necessary strategies to it get done," he said.
