RENO (AP) - Nevada history buffs held events Saturday to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express.
A festival featuring gunfighters and Pony Express and Civil War reenactors was held at Fort Churchill near Silver Springs.
A U.S. Postal Service representative also provided a special commemorative stamp for letters that will be carried by horseback along the old Pony Express Trail.
In Ely, buffs ran a Pony Express Special using original Nevada Northern Railway passenger equipment, including the railway post office railroad car.
A relay of Pony Express riders carried mail for 18 months between St. Joseph, Mo., and San Francisco beginning April 3, 1860.
U.S. Highway 50 roughly parallels the old Pony Express Trail across most of northern Nevada.
