Western Nevada College's baseball team stretched its Scenic West Conference winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep of host Colorado Northwestern on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats won the opener 15-0 behind the
3-hit pitching of Jake Waardenburg, who fanned three in five innings of work. WNC had to work a little harder in the second game, scoring four in the ninth to grab an 8-4 win.
WNC is 14-6, three games behind Southern Nevada College, which split its doubleheader against Salt Lake on Saturday.
"It was a great weekend," said D.J. Whittemore, WNC head coach. "I'm happy we got all four games in. We had to battle the elements. The wind was 30 miles an hour. The guys did a good job playing every pitch."
Kyle Conwell continued to swing the bat well, smashing a grand slam. Jonathan Sigado added a solo homer. Pat McMeel had three hits in the win and drove in two runs. Kevin Taylor went 2-for-5 with an RBI, Eric Maupin went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored and Trevor Goff went 2-for-4. Jay Skilton and Brooks Klein also added a hit each. Klein drove in two runs.
In the second game, Colorado Northwestern tied the game at 4 with a three-run homer in the sixth inning.
Conwell, Taylor and McMeel drove in runs to snap the 4-all tie and give WNC the win.
Taylor went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while Skilton and Goff each collected two hits. Klein had three RBIs.
Dyllon Nuernberg picked up the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out three and walked one. Tim Peterson worked the first 4.1 innings and was followed by Jeff Barto.
